Bone Density: Let's talk about our Bones

Let’s talk about bones—the ones we never think about. The ones that quietly hold us upright every day.

After our 30s, our bodies still make new bone, but it breaks down slightly faster than it's formed. Bone production doesn’t stop—it just doesn’t keep up unless we give it a reason to. For women, this process often speeds up after menopause.

Here’s the kicker: even though women can go through menopause at all different ages, most women aren't eligible to get a bone density test until later in life, often after bone loss has already happened or after a fracture. At my last doctor's appointment, I inquired about getting a bone density test done, but because I'm not 65, the age that most insurance companies cover the test, I would have to pay full price, trying to be proactive. By the time bone health becomes a conversation, the damage may already be underway.

Why does this matter? Because bones can break while doing everyday things—slipping on ice, tripping over the dog, or missing the last stair. Strong bones help us stay mobile, confident, and independent.

The good news? Bone loss is not inevitable.

Bones love resistance. Strength training tells your bones, “Hey, we still need you.” Squats, lunges, lifting weights, or using resistance bands just two to three times a week can help protect—and even improve—bone density.

Bones also love gravity. Weight-bearing activities like walking, hiking, dancing, and stair climbing force your bones to support your body weight. And balance training matters too—not because it builds bone, but because it helps prevent falls.

Finally, bones need fuel. Calcium, vitamin D, protein, and regular meals all play a role in keeping bones strong.

The Call to Action

Don’t wait for a bone density test to tell you it’s time to care for your bones. Start now.

Add strength training to your week. Walk with purpose. Practice balance. Feed your body well. Small, consistent actions today can protect your bones for decades to come.

Strong bones support strong living—and that’s worth investing in.

Heather,

This is great info to share ! I recently had my second bone density test and it had improved from the first one. I trust that it due to the strength training classes I attend with you and my diet !

Hey, thanks for the info Heather. It actually makes a lot of sense. Haven’t thought about that before. Looks like I’ll be adding a little salt and a little maple syrup!

A great all natural deodorant is made by Little Seed Farm. Honestly, it is the only natural deodorant that seems to actually work for me.

Great information Heather, I’ve been there too and just a side note for those gals (like me) who suffer sensitivities to chemicals, my savior was apple cider vinegar to “kill bacteria” after washing and then I used coconut oil rubbed in the pit area. I also added essential oils of lemongrass or geranium for a scent. The ACV was only as needed sometimes takes a few days to kill all bacteria causing smell and then daily with the coconut oil.
